| Flamingo Cantina does its best to pretend the club is in the West Indies, on the islands, with dancers gyrating and grinding to an amorphic rasta groove. The facades inside look like grass huts stolen from the Gilligan's Island sound stage. But the Professor and Mary Ann didn't have it so hip. This is the undisputed Austin embassy of Caribbean sounds. Dirty ol' 6th Street never had it so good with the Killer Bees, the Ark Band, and various other groups pulsing out smooth rhythms. Kind of a cool change from all the retro and techno that rattles up and down the strip. But if that's where you've been and you feel out of place in your up-town swanky threads, fret not. The good Cantina folks are set up to deck you out in the proper Bob Marley and tie-dye T-shirts for just that kind of fashion emergency. |
